Last night I attended the First Thursday Meetup at Christine Tremoulet’s studio in the Houston Heights. It’s a mix of the Fast Track Photographers group and the Houston Pictage User Group (PUG). Personally, I’m not a member of either of those groups but it’s a great place to meet other photographers in the Houston area and discuss a topic of interest. And it’s not just for wedding photographers – all photographers are welcome! If you’re a Houston photographer, you should definitely check it out! It meets on the first Thursday of each month at Christine’s studio.
Last night’s topic of discussion was niche markets. Namely, what is your niche market? The idea behind this is that as business owners, we can’t realistically be all things to all people so we need to define the particular market we want to serve so that we can better reach people in that market. The more specific we can be, the more able we’ll be to identify how we should be spending our time and resources. This decision should affect almost everything in our business – everything form how we design our businesses, to how we market our businesses, and what are workflows looks like – everything is affected by this decision.
I think it’s really easy to have a pretty good, vague notion of what our target market looks like. But it takes a lot more work to be really specific about this and to outline your niche market’s needs and wants, and how you’re able to serve them in each of those areas. So I need to spend some time thinking about the people I’m best able to serve and I’ll let you know about some neat changes coming to the site when that process is done. :)
Have a great Friday everyone and I’ll start back up with Part III of K&C’s wedding tomorrow. If you’re new to the blog, please feel free to check out their Sneak Peak, and Parts I and II of their wedding.
